BiG APE was a dance theatre company active between 2008-2012 in Middlebury, Vermont.
Their mission was to create and promote art that was daring, provocative, and curious. Their work questioned the standard conventions of dance and awakened audiences to a blend of performance that responded to both the bliss and brutality of living while speaking to the humanness in all of us. They were not interested in simply entertaining you; they wanted to take you somewhere, somewhere that will make you think, feel, react, move, sit up, stand up and take action.
Big APE was established in 2008 by dancer and filmmaker, Tiffany Rhynard. Big APE productions incorporated vigorous physicality, original and sourced text, original sound scores, and always engaged lively audience participation. Rhynard created a visual dialogue between the physical and the psychological; the performers traversed often unpredictable landscapes while translating and magnifying the humorous and poetic consequences of being human. Big APE was presented locally at Town Hall Theater, Middlebury College, FlynnSpace, and Lost Nation Theater; nationally at The Tank in NYC, with Dim Sum Dance in Chicago, and Juddertone Performance Series in Boston; and internationally at Hotel Pupik in Scheifling, Austria.
